Add an Event to Our Website

Step 1: Creating an Event

  • Log in to Sitecore with your network credentials
  • Navigate to the Content Editor
  • Expand the Content folder
  • Expand the Global folder
  • Expand the Shared folder
  • Navigate to the Events folder
  • Right-click on the main Event Item Folder and select "Insert > Event"
  • Sitecore will then open the content for your new event which contains the relevant fields for you to edit.

Step 2: Editing the Event Content and Fields

Visibility

Visibility Section (Where to Display the Event)

In most cases, you want to select both “Display on Public Site” and “Display on myGU." If you have instructions to display an event on just one of the sites, then check only the corresponding box.

Meta Information

Note: Sitecore will have automatically filled in some of the fields for you, such as Meta Title, Description, and Keywords.

Meta Title

The Meta title should match the page title in most cases, and you don’t need to edit this.

Meta Description

Meta description tags, while not tied to search engine rankings, are extremely important in gaining user click-through from SERPs. These short paragraphs are a webmaster's opportunity to "advertise" content to searchers, and searchers' chance to decide whether the content is relevant and contains the information they're seeking from their search query.

A page's meta description should intelligently (read: in a natural, active, non-spammy way) employ the keywords that page is targeting, but also create a compelling description that a searcher will want to click. It should be directly relevant to the page it describes, and unique from the descriptions for other pages.

For more detailed information about meta descriptions, see the Moz guide for meta descriptions.

Keywords

While the keyword is automatically filled in for you, this is just a starting point. As a content creator, you want the keywords on your page to be relevant to what people are searching for so they have a better chance of finding your content among the results.

We recommend that you pull keywords from your URL (automatically populated), speaker name, lecture series, the meta description, and alt attributes of images on the event. Using your keywords in these areas is the most basic way to target your content to searches.

For more information on keywords, see the Moz guide for keywords.

OpenGraph Details

Open Graph is an HTML markup used by social networks to display shared content. If you plan to share this event on social media you will add an appropriately sized image, title and description.

Event Info

Title

The title will usually match the name of the page, but it can contain more content friendly conventions. For example, you might have a page that is named “Campaign Focus Shifts to Science and Scholarships”, and want that to be presented to the user as “Campaign Focus Shifts to Science & Scholarships.” Avoid using special characters in the item names, but you can use these sparingly in a title.

Body

Click on the “Show Editor” link and enter content based on the guidelines you learned in basic editor training. If you are copying from a word document, choose the paste as plain text option.

When you are done adding content, click the “Accept” button in the lower right corner.

Event Date

If the event is all day, check the "All Day Event" box, otherwise select a start and end date.

Image:

Click on “Browse”, and then navigate to the Tree View on the upper right of the “Select Media” dialog box. From there, you want to navigate to “Website > Images > Stories" and then select the image that you have previously uploaded to the correct location in the media library.

All images should follow our image conventions guide.
